Hyperpigmentation is an issue that many people face at some point in their lives. In fact, 50% of the population has a pigmentary disorder of some kind. It can appear in various forms and can be challenging to treat. One day, you may look in the mirror and discover a few new brown spots on your face, or you might notice a red spot lingering after a breakout. You may even see larger patches after changing your birth control or during pregnancy.
The goal of treating hyperpigmentation is to lighten existing dark spots and prevent the formation of new ones. There are several methods available for addressing pigmentation issues, and for optimal results, it is often beneficial to combine these approaches. Keep reading to find out the most common types of hyperpigmentation, products, and treatments to help lighten and prevent new pigment from forming.
What is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color, is produced and deposited in certain areas. This can result in patches of skin that are darker than your surrounding skin tone.
Common Types of Pigmentation:
-
Sunspots (Solar Lentigines): These are small, darkened patches caused by long-term sun exposure. They typically appear on areas frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, and décolletage.
-
Melasma: This condition presents as larger, symmetrical patches of brown or grayish pigmentation, often on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. Hormonal changes (pregnancy, birth control), sun exposure, and genetics can contribute to melasma.
-
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): These dark spots appear after skin inflammation or injury, such as acne breakouts, eczema, or cuts. The pigment remains even after the skin has healed.

-
Sciton BBL (BroadBand Light): BBL is a powerful light-based therapy that targets and breaks down excess melanin (pigment) in the skin. It's highly effective for treating sunspots, redness, and overall skin discoloration, leading to a more even and youthful appearance. This treatment is best for lighter skin tones.
-
Sciton Moxi Laser: Moxi is a gentle, non-ablative fractional laser that resurfaces the skin and improves tone and texture. It's an excellent option for addressing mild to moderate pigmentation, as well as preventing future discoloration. Moxi targets water in the skin, so it’s best to have hydrated skin. This also makes it safe for all skin tones.
-
VI Peel: These medical-grade chemical peels contain a blend of powerful ingredients, such as retinoic acid, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), ascorbic acid, salicylic acid, and phenol, that exfoliate the top layers of skin, effectively reducing the appearance of sunspots, PIH, and melasma. We recommend the VI Precision Plus peel formulated for hyperpigmentation.
Home-Care Regimen: Tyrosinase Inhibitors
To complement our in-office treatments, we offer a curated selection of medical-grade skincare products from leading brands like ZO Skin Health, Skinbetter Science, and SkinCeuticals. These products contain potent ingredients that work to improve skin pigmentation.
When dealing with pigmentation, a product you absolutely need in your home care regimen is a tyrosinase inhibitor. Tyrosinase is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color. When this enzyme is overactive due to factors like sun exposure, hormonal changes, or inflammation, it can lead to the overproduction of melanin, resulting in issues like dark spots, melasma, and other forms of hyperpigmentation.
Incorporating a tyrosinase inhibitor will block or slow down the activity of this enzyme. By doing so, it effectively reduces the amount of new melanin being produced. This helps to both fade existing dark spots and prevent new ones from forming, leading to a more even and brighter skin tone. Here are our favorite tyrosinase inhibitors at Boss Gal:
-
ZO Skin Health Brightalive Skin Brightener: A hydroquinone-free serum that is clinically proven to increase luminosity, visibly improve skin clarity, and fade the appearance of dark spots for a more even complexion.
-
Skinbetter Science Even Intensive Skin Tone Correcting Serum: This advanced serum features ingredients such as Vitamin C and Alpha-Arbutin to target stubborn discoloration and an AHA Blend that provides gentle resurfacing to even skin tone.
-
SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense: This daily dark spot corrector is formulated with tranexamic acid, kojic acid, and niacinamide to reduce the appearance of skin discoloration, including hard-to-treat forms such as stubborn brown patches and post-acne marks.
The Role of Hydroquinone in Pigmentation Treatment
For more severe and stubborn cases of hyperpigmentation, hydroquinone remains the gold standard. Hydroquinone is a powerful depigmenting agent that works by directly inhibiting tyrosinase. It can reduce tyrosinase activity by as much as 90%. This makes it exceptionally effective at lightening dark spots, including those from melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Due to its potency, hydroquinone is typically available by prescription and is best used under the guidance of a professional. It is often prescribed for a limited duration to prevent potential side effects and is used in a "cycling" regimen with other tyrosinase inhibitors. While our hydroquinone-free options are excellent for maintenance and less severe pigmentation, hydroquinone is often the most effective solution for jumpstarting the process of significantly reducing difficult-to-treat pigmentation.
